About Get Home Safe

What is self defense? By definition it is the countermeasure that involves defending the health and well-being of oneself from harm. Through classes one can learn how to defend themselves against another individual. This can be gained through awareness of the situation, avoidance of harm and basic fundamentals of self defense skills. It is my goal to ensure that my students have the highest quality of training as well as optimum performance of applying self defense when protecting themselves or their loved ones.

We train in all ranges (standing, clinch, and ground), weapons and multiple opponents. In order to be truly effective we have to be efficient in all of these ranges and scenarios. Progressive resistance is a huge part of our training. As you progress and feel more and more comfortable, we slowly increase the resistance in your training. Meaning that on day one, you can start sparring safely and learning the importance of sparring.

FUN…. One of he goals here, if not the most important goal is to insure that everyone is having fun. When you’re having fun, not only does it reinforce you to want to do it more, but your brain also is more willing to accept the information that it is getting.

“You should train seriously, but don’t seriously train.” Bruce Lee

About Scott Ishihara

My martial arts journey began in 1998, starting with Capoeira for a year while in college with my then girlfriend Liz. That class slowly fizzled away so we joined Jeet Kune Do Unlimited lead by world renowned Burton Richardson.  Honestly we didn’t know who he was when we signed up. Burton was just the nicest and most genuine person we had ever meet.

Since then I have been very fortunate to have trained with some of the best martial artist in the world. I’ve gotten to be a personal training/sparring partner with Burton and have appeared in several of his books and DVDs. I was even in a feature film that took me all the way to the Philippines. The film later won an award for best fight choreography at the Action on Film International Festival.

Over the years I have traveled and taught throughout the state of Hawaii, the West coast (California, Oregon, and Washington) and as far away as London in 2017. Sharing my knowledge and love for martial arts is one of the most enjoyable parts of traveling.

Our ohana lives in Kaimuki, part of the East Honolulu area. My wife Liz and two daughters, Willow and River, try to practice our martial arts when our busy family schedules allow it.

For about 20 years, my “day job” has been working as a Skills Trainer. Embarking on that career path since 2002 has given me insight into the human condition and goal oriented learning. As a Skills Trainer, I work one on one with children with autism and other special needs. I enjoy helping parents and students in this community move forward and improve their every day lives. This teaching experience has influenced and informed the way I interact with all my students.
